Love takes centre stage

Romeo and Juliet, Sandy and Danny, Erik and Christine, even Nala and Simba.  Epic couples with one thing in common – their legendary love stories have played out on stages across the world for decades.

Whether tragic, forbidden, or romantic – the theatre is always able to bring love to life in an unparalleled way, and with Valentine’s Day around the corner, love is certainly taking centre stage in Wales Millennium Centre this year.

In our quest to inspire our nation, and impress the world – we are bringing musicals such as Grease, Miss Saigon and Rent to Cardiff in 2017.

The Centre will certainly be a target for cupid’s arrow and we know one (or more!) of these classics will win your heart.  So here’s our pick of most romantic theatre shows ever to grace the stage to put you in the mood for love.

One for the couples


Critically acclaimed rock musical Rent proves that love flourishes in the most challenging of circumstances.

The Tony-Award-winning musical is heading to the Centre in April as it marks its 20thanniversary.

Based on Giacomo Puccini‘s opera La Bohème, the musical tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling with life and love in New York City‘s East Village as society is affected by the HIV and AIDS epidemic.

Bruce Guthrie’s brand new production features unforgettable music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson with beloved songs including I’ll Cover You, Seasons of Love, and La Vie Boheme.

The musical, taking to the stage on 3 April 2017, stars X Factor’s Lucie Jones and Billy Elliott’s Layton Williams. It’s a rock and roll twist on romance not to be missed!

Miss Saigon

If you’re planning a romantic date night for your significant other, then Miss Saigon is perfect!

It’s got everything – drama, romance, tragedy, and beautiful, beautiful songs.

The award-winning West End musical, from Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, has been captivating audiences across the globe for almost 30 years

The legendary production tells the heartbreaking tale of a young bar girl and an American soldier who fall in love towards the end of the Vietnam War only to be torn apart by the fall of Saigon.

The production features some of theatre’s most beautiful love songs from Sun and Moon, to Last Night of the World, and I Still Believe.

Miss Saigon is consistently chosen as one of the top musicals of all time  – and rightly so!

It may not be heading to the Centre until 29 November 2017, but it’s the perfect gift for your Valentine.

West Side Story

Tonight, tonight, It all began tonight, I saw you and the world went away.

Everyone loves the lyrics and everyone loves the story.

West Side Story is one of the all-time great tragic love stories that we simply can’t help but sing along to.

The musical, originally written by Arthur Laurents, with music from Leonard Bernstein and lyrics from Stephen Sondheim, is inspired by Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Romeo and Juliet.

However, instead of Verona – these two lovers’ ill-fated meeting takes place on the Upper West Side of New York in the 1950s.

With beloved songs including Maria, Tonight, Somewhere, and America, this show is an instant classic and a true love story.

“Romeo, Romeo, Wherefore art thou Romeo?”

The Wales Millennium Centre from April 27 to May 14 that’s where!

Shakespeare’s ultimate tragic love story will be heading to the Weston Studio for two and a half weeks this spring.

The Bard’s iconic tale of love and tragedy is retold in this heart-wrenching co-production between Omidaze and Wales Millennium Centre. NoFitState are involved too – this show isn’t your usual Shakespeare, expect aerial circus, an ensemble cast and a proper night out.

Elphaba had it right when she wanted to defy gravity.

Why not try the impossible, dare to dream, and for once – learn to love yourself.

This multi-ward-winning take on the classic Wizard of Oz story and its empowered female lead has struck a chord with women across the globe.

Since it burst onto Broadway 14 years ago it has captivated audiences.

Now it is preparing to return to the Centre for the first time since it thrilled Welsh audiences in 2013.

The unforgettable show, packed with musical favourites including Defying Gravity, will run until 31 October 2017 – 24 November 2018.

Funny Girl

When all else fails, don’t let anyone rain on your parade – that was Fanny Brice’s motto.

The charismatic leading lady and her critically acclaimed West End show will be heading to Cardiff this year.

Funny Girl, directed by Michael Mayer, will be appearing at the Centre from 4 July until 8 July 2017.

The award-winning show follows Fanny Brice in her meteoric rise from budding singer to Broadway star and her devotion to one man.

It boasts some of the most iconic songs of theatre, including Don’t Rain on My Parade, and People.

Don’t miss this smash hit when it comes to Cardiff.

Hello, Dolly!

It’s one of the most enduring musicals of all time, spawning numerous awards, revivals and hits around the world.

Hello, Dolly! with music and lyrics from Jerry Herman, has been a smash hit for over four decades.

The quirky story looks at prioritising yourself.

It follows matchmaker and hopeless romantic Dolly Levi who makes a habit of meddling in the romances of others.

The show, set in New York at the turn of the century, sees the witty matchmaker finally choose to put herself first when it comes to love.

It features empowering songs including Before the Parade Passes By, which is an anthem for loving yourself and remembering who you are.

Happily ever after

Mamma Mia!

Even before Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Street burst into song and onto our screens, Mamma Mia had captured our hearts on stage.

The musical, centred around the hits of supergroup ABBA, was written by  British playwright Catherine Johnson, and composed by former band members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.

It first premiered in London in 1999 and went on to enjoy more than 16 years on stages across the globe.

The story follows soon-to-be-married Sophie who lives on a Greek island and is searching for her real father to walk her down the aisle. But, with three possible fathers, she decides to invite them all to her wedding without informing her unsuspecting mother.

The heart-warming story, with a fantastic soundtrack, explores themes of long-lost love, true love, the love of friends, and undying love.

All in all it is the perfect date movie, or just one for you and your friends.

Crazy for You

If it’s drama, love, and dancing you’re in the mood for – then Crazy For You is ideal!

The high-energy, high-kicking love story features plot twists, heartbreak, happiness and feel good tunes galore!

And If that sounds like your ideal date night, then the musical, starring Strictly’s Tom Chambers, will be lighting up the Centre from 5 September 2017.

The multi-award-winning romantic comedy surrounds the troubled love story of Bobby and Polly. Bobby, the son of a wealthy New York family is sent to shut down a failing theatre, owned by Polly’s family. However, in the process he falls for her and decides to save the beloved theatre instead.

Theatre-goers will also be treated to an iconic selection of Gershwin songs including They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Nice Work if You Can Get It, and I Got Rhythm.

Film fans who are hopelessly devoted to Grease are in for a treat this July.

The smash hit musical love story, which is one of the most iconic of the past four decades, is set to take to the stage at the Centre from 17 July 2017.

Watch Danny and Sandy fall in love all over again to the unforgettable soundtrack featuring The One That I Want, Hopelessly Devoted To You, Greased Lightnin’, and Summer Nights.

This adaptation will feature The Wanted’s Tom Parker; Strictly Come Dancing’s Louisa Lytton; and Over the Rainbow’s Danielle Hope.
